What’s the deal with China?
China has reportedly signed a $1.3 billion deal to build its first nuclear reactor, a deal that could potentially boost the country’s nuclear industry, Reuters reports.
According to a report in Chinese media, the deal includes the purchase of 20 of China’s 20 existing reactors and the construction of a new unit at the Yongbyon nuclear power plant.
Reuters reported that China will also begin construction on a new heavy water reactor that could be used to produce power from deep water and the country is currently building its first reactor in a site in the northwestern province of Shandong.
While there are currently no indications of the country producing any nuclear fuel from its existing nuclear sites, the Reuters report said that Chinese officials have confirmed that they intend to build a nuclear power station in the area and will soon complete a feasibility study for the project.
